When you purchase these kits, you will get a tattoo gun, sterilized needles, black and colored inks, stencils and instructions. Some of them even come with DVDs explaining how to do tattoos properly. The quality of the guns provided in good tattooing kits is usually much higher than anything that you could make it home.
If you choose to do tattoos at home, you really should buy a high quality kit. You should also learn all you can about the proper sterilization of the equipment before attempting to do your first tattoo. You should never under any circumstance reuse tattooing needles. Even if you are doing the tattoo on yourself and using the same needle on yourself over and over, you could get sick. If you end up tattooing yourself using the same needle that you have previously used on yourself, the probability of getting an infection from using the same needle is very high if it is not properly sterlized. Most people do not have the proper equipment at home to adequately sterilize these needles.
Always wear surgical grade rubber gloves to protect yourself from other blood borne pathogens. It's also a good idea to wear a mask especially if you are contagious from a recent illness.
It's important to keep in mind that just because you have purchased a quality tattooing kit, that does not suddenly qualify you to give tattoos to yourself or your friends. Tattoo artists train for years under qualified mentors to learn the art. If you simply go out an buy a kit, you may find that the results that you get are less than favorable.
It is true that you can give tattoos with many of the kits that are on the market but the results will be much better if you get some training from a qualified instructor before you try your hand at this art.
Use proper safety precautions, follow the instructions, get training, take your time, and you will have a much better chance of being pleased with the results.
